As the world develops around us at such lightning-fast speed, it’s hard to imagine what it used to be like. However, it does make you wonder how it all started. How did people make peace with the ever-evolving technology? Although it has resulted in greater accessibility, having so many things changing at once proves to be overwhelming at some point.
Like many other places, Philadelphia has evolved rapidly over time; not only geographically but also with changing mindsets. This is what has propelled that nation to progress toward a better tomorrow. For instance, in the past, parents demanded nothing of perfection from their children. This overarching effect has only resulted in kids of the current generation wanting to avoid reflecting the same brutal expectations onto their children.
In the 80s, people had a much more developed sense of committing to something in their lives. Although some may have wrongly practiced how to go about that, there was always a will to succeed. Nowadays, many youngsters rely on inherited wealth or figure things out as they go along. As a result, there is no room for set plans or defined goals in the world today.
Topographically, Philadelphia seemed to move towards a better tomorrow very rapidly. For instance, during the 1800s, houses were built in close proximity to the sea. At the time, the shipping industry was growing and was located where early central Philadelphia is today. If you walked along the coast, you would see rows of ships lined up. Those ships could carry anything anywhere, a novel and exciting concept then.
It is not too long ago that ships such as these were used to transport slaves instead of materials. But this practice had been banned for more than 20 years. In addition to that, freedom laws had also been introduced in this part of the country, making it the first law that outlawed slavery. It is good to know that Philadelphia took the first step toward a free American community.
It is also remarkable that when the outline was created to build the ideal society, city planners had the foresight to know that they would need wider streets so that people could put up their produce carts. Eventually, there were various vendors out there bright and early. After more than a decade, it became renowned as Market Street. It had existed for several years but, after a while, became more organized. The carts were placed according to the selection of what they were offering. Fruits and vegetables took point, followed by meat, and then fish. After some time, a market clerk was appointed to manage things like which stalls were assigned to which vendor.
Market street was quite famous as it was America’s biggest open-air market which provided a range of products. This was also when carriages for hire were introduced so people could roam around the expanding city. These advancements only marked the beginning; so much more was planned for this land. Even back then, this vision surpassed all imaginable limits.
